**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty concerning what awaited me. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been introverted and withdrawn, stepping into the unfamiliar was a significant departure from my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with personal growth, challenges, and lots of enjoyment, I realize how transformative this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the onset of university was forging friendships. If you’re an aspiring student, this may be a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes started, I spent an entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet people. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve developed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced.
The pivotal moment came when I resolved to take a chance and start small conversations with those who were experiencing similar feelings. Gradually, these chats blossomed into profound friendships, and I now feel as though I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial.
What have I learned from this? First, taking that first step to connect with others is worth it, even if it seems frightening. If you’re not quite ready immediately, no problem—there are countless icebreaker events and opportunities to socialize throughout the year. Second, the best approach is to be yourself. With such a diverse student body, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Managing the Academic Hurdles
Another major challenge was adapting to the demands of the workload and the complexity of the course materials. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even steeper. It’s common to feel inundated or question your abilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you’re keeping pace.
What aided me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone experiences similar challenges. If something doesn’t make sense to you, it’s likely others are grappling with it as well. The essential thing is to ask for assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Cultivating the ability to seek help is arguably the most beneficial skill you can acquire in your first year.
### The Value of Support
Speaking of assistance, I must highlight how remarkable the Materials department staff are. They genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us and offered various kinds of support.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support services until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with them sooner. Early on, I took a step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to form strong bonds with staff members. This proved to be an invaluable experience. There are many avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My greatest takeaway? Make the most of the support available to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Upon reflecting on my first year, I’ve discovered that the apprehension I had before starting university—and even during the academic year—was frequently unfounded. With the extensive range of support options provided by both staff and fellow students, I was never truly alone. This year has taught me how to manage stress from exams and deadlines while also enjoying myself, and it has highlighted the importance of venturing beyond my comfort zone.
As I progress, I am thankful for the self-growth, challenges, and relationships that have defined my first year. To anyone preparing to begin their own university journey: embrace the anxieties, take those leaps, and remember—you’ve got this!
