**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxious anticipation, fear, and self-doubt regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been somewhat introverted, plunging into this new phase felt daunting. Now, as I contemplate the previous academic year, I perceive a time of significant personal development, challenges, and unforgettable memories. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
A major hurdle I encountered was befriending others. Beginning university can seem intimidating, and if you’re a potential student reading this, you might resonate with the sentiment. On my inaugural day in student housing, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve cultivated some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. These bonds have turned into my second family, both within the university and my department. What changed? It commenced with taking small steps—engaging in light conversation with others who were just as apprehensive as I was.
The greatest lesson I gained is that taking a chance early on pays off. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. And above all, remain true to yourself. With a myriad of diverse individuals at university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
### Adjusting to the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was acclimating to the workload and the greater complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more daunting. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and doubt your capacities, especially when you observe others studying and presume they have everything under control.
What assisted me was realizing that everyone shares the same struggles. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, likely others are, too. The key is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. This is arguably the most crucial skill to master in your first year: don’t hesitate to ask for help.
### The Significance of Encouraging Staff
On the subject of support, the personnel in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and understand the hurdles we face. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open and provided consistent encouragement.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until the year’s end, and I now wish I had utilized it sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to establish relationships with staff members, which proved to be an invaluable opportunity. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the help and resources at your disposal—you can never have too much support!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced—both before embarking on my university journey and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With a plethora of supportive options available from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to embrace challenges, seek assistance when necessary, and find joy even amidst the stresses of exams and deadlines.
As I look ahead, I’m thankful for the growth I’ve achieved and the friendships I’ve built. To anyone about to commence their own university adventure, my message is straightforward: take that leap, be yourself, and do not hesitate to seek help.
