**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what would come next. I was on the verge of embarking on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unknown seemed daunting. However, looking back at the last academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles to overcome, and memorable experiences. So, what lessons has this year imparted to me, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Social Connections
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be one of your primary worries as well. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I isolated myself in my room, far too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. These bonds have developed into a second family for me, both within my program and throughout the university. What sparked this change? Taking that initial step of courage. Starting with small gestures, like engaging in light conversation with fellow newcomers, can yield great results.

If you’re feeling uncertain or a bit shy, fear not! Universities frequently organize icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. The most crucial lesson I’ve embraced is to be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and beliefs.

### Addressing the Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the increased complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first term to the second term proved even tougher. It’s natural to feel swamped or question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others appearing to juggle things with ease.

What helped me navigate these challenges was realizing that everyone faces similar hurdles. If you’re struggling with a concept, likely, others are too. The solution lies in asking for assistance—be it from classmates or instructors. Developing the habit of seeking help is arguably the most essential skill you can cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Regarding support, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely want students to thrive and understand the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and offering guidance.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral assistance available until later in the year, and I regret not reaching out earlier. One of the smartest choices I made was taking on the role of a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with faculty members, which turned out to be a tremendously rewarding experience. There are numerous opportunities to foster relationships with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My biggest takeaway? Make the most of the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
Looking back on my first year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt before starting university, and even throughout the year, was frequently unfounded. There is a wealth of support available, from both faculty and fellow students, to help you tackle any difficulties.

This year has shown me that I am never truly alone, and it’s entirely feasible to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment. As I anticipate the upcoming academic year, I feel increasingly confident and enthusiastic about what lies ahead.

To anyone preparing to embark on their university experience: take the plunge, embrace the hardships, and don’t hold back from seeking support. You’ll be astounded by the growth you can achieve in just one year.
