**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was brimming with anxious excitement as I geared up to embark on my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman. For someone who had always been somewhat introverted, venturing into the unfamiliar seemed daunting. Now, reflecting on the year, it has been a period of significant transformation—full of learning, obstacles, and countless unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

### Navigating the Difficulty of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the idea of forming new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, you might share this concern. On my first day in the halls, I spent hours secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life.

The pivotal moment came when I found the bravery to engage in casual conversations with others who were feeling equally new and unsure. Gradually, these exchanges flourished into significant friendships. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with a simple act of courage.

What have I taken away from this? Firstly, it’s essential to take that first step, no matter how intimidating it seems. If you’re not quite ready immediately, that’s okay—numerous icebreaking events and occasions to meet new people will arise throughout the year. Secondly, be genuine. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter others who share your passions and beliefs.

### Confronting the Academic Transition
Adapting to the academic pressures of university was yet another major obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university-level studies was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel engulfed by self-doubt when surrounded by high-achieving peers.

What assisted me in managing this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, odds are that others are too. The crucial takeaway is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. This has been perhaps the most important lesson I acquired during my initial year: never hesitate to request support.

### The Value of Supportive Staff
One of the most remarkable features of my experience has been the outstanding support from the staff in the Materials department. They genuinely care about student success and are sympathetic to the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our concerns and providing guidance.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. Accepting the role of well-being representative for my year was a daunting step, but it became one of the most fulfilling choices I made. It enabled me to foster relationships with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable.

My recommendation? Leverage the resources and support systems at your disposal. Whether you need academic assistance or pastoral care, there’s no such thing as excessive support.

### Lessons Gained
Looking back over my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the anxieties I had—both prior to and during university—were baseless. With the abundant support provided by staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. This year has shown me how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and laughter.

Commencing university can feel like stepping into a vast unknown, yet it’s also a wonderful opportunity for tremendous growth. If you’re about to embark on your own journey, welcome the challenges, take those bold steps, and remember—you are not by yourself.
