**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what was forthcoming. I was on the brink of commencing my path as a first-year student in the [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) program. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new phase felt overwhelming. Now, as I contemplate the last academic year, I recognize a time of significant development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I currently stand?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting elements of commencing university was forming friendships. If you’re a potential student, this may also be one of your primary worries. On my inaugural day in student housing, just a few days ahead of classes starting, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too intimidated to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to today, and I can assert that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. My classmates have turned into my second family, and this feeling of belonging initiated with small, uncomplicated conversations with others feeling just as anxious as I was.

What did I discover? Taking that first step of courage at the year’s start is vital. If you’re not prepared immediately, don’t fret—there will be countless icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Above all, simply be yourself. With so many varied individuals at university, you’re sure to connect with people who share your interests and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Adapting to the demands and intricacies of university-level content was another considerable challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities, especially when observing others studying and questioning if you’re keeping pace.

What benefited me was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something confusing, it’s likely that others are struggling as well. The important thing is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or the faculty. Learning to reach out for support is arguably the most valuable ability you can cultivate in your first year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of support, the personnel in the Materials department are outstanding. They sincerely want students to thrive and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and actively responded to our concerns.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral aid available until late in the year, I wish I had started earlier. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative was one of the steps I took at the year’s onset, and it enabled me to cultivate connections with staff members. This was highly fulfilling and something I would recommend to anyone. Whether through formal positions or informal interactions, getting acquainted with your lecturers and tutors can significantly impact your experience. My primary takeaway? Make the most of the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Upon reflection, this year has revealed to me that the anxiety I faced—both before entering university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive support from staff and fellow students, I was never truly alone. I’ve learned to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines alongside moments of enjoyment and happiness.

Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a transformative journey, marked by personal development, new friendships, and invaluable lessons. If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, welcome the challenges, take those bold steps, and remember that support is always available.
