**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was laden with anxiety, apprehension, and unsure of what awaited me. I was preparing to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and somewhat reserved, venturing into the unknown seemed overwhelming. Reflecting on this past year, I realize it was not only rife with challenges but also a period of substantial personal development and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most daunting parts of starting university was the prospect of making new friends. If you’re a potential student reading this, you might share those concerns. On my first day in university housing, just days before classes kicked off, I spent the entire day cooped up in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Now, looking back, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known—friends who feel like my extended family.

How did this transformation occur? It began with simple actions, like engaging in light conversation with others who were similarly apprehensive. I came to understand that taking initial risks is vital. If you’re not ready to connect right away, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to engage with fellow students. Most importantly, I learned that being authentic is the most effective strategy. With such a rich diversity at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with you.

### Addressing Academic Challenges
Adapting to the academic demands and complexities was another major challenge. The shift from A-levels to university was distinctly significant, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel inundated or question your competence when observing others diligently studying and wondering if you measure up.

What enabled me to persevere was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find something perplexing, others likely are as well. The essential skill to cultivate in your first year is the willingness to seek assistance—whether from peers or faculty.

### Caring Staff and Pastoral Support
On the topic of staff, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The educators and staff are truly invested in the success of students and are sympathetic to the hurdles we encounter. They foster open lines of communication throughout the academic year, responding to any issues we bring up.

Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I wish I had sought it out sooner. Early in the year, I stepped up by becoming a well-being representative, which helped me establish valuable connections with faculty members. This turned out to be one of the most enriching experiences of my first year. There are numerous avenues for engaging with staff, and I highly encourage you to take advantage of these offerings. The support is available to empower you, so don’t hesitate to embrace it.

### Essential Lessons Learned
As I look back, this year has imparted several crucial lessons. Firstly, the feelings of nervousness and fear I experienced before starting university—and throughout the year—were frequently misplaced. There is an abundance of support available, both from staff and fellow students, to help you tackle any obstacles. Secondly, I learned that I am never truly solitary, regardless of how overwhelming circumstances may seem. Finally, I’ve figured out how to cope with the stresses of exams and deadlines while also embracing moments of joy and enjoyment.

Beginning university can feel frightening, but it is also an extraordinary chance for personal development, connection, and exploration. If you’re on the verge of starting your own adventure, don’t hesitate to take that leap—you may just astonish yourself with your potential.
