**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was enveloped in a mix of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who had always been somewhat timid and introverted, venturing into the unknown was certainly outside my comfort zone. Now, as I reflect on the previous academic year, it has been a time of tremendous personal development, challenges, and endless joyous experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Taking the Plunge: Building Friendships
One of the most intimidating trials I faced was forming friendships. For many incoming students, this tends to be one of the primary concerns when commencing university. On my initial day in student housing, just a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too hesitant to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can affirmatively state that I’ve formed some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever known—friends who resemble a second family.
How did this metamorphosis occur? It initiated with small actions, such as initiating conversations with others who were in similar situations. I learned that taking an early leap, even when it feels uncomfortable, is worthwhile. And if you’re not ready immediately, that’s perfectly fine too. Universities, including Imperial, provide numerous ice-breaking events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, I recognized that being authentic is crucial. With such a varied student community, you’re bound to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Confronting the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened difficulty of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated and doubt your capabilities, especially when observing others around you seemingly flourishing.
What assisted me was the understanding that I wasn’t isolated in this experience. Everyone was facing similar obstacles, and if I struggled with something, it was likely that others did as well. The most meaningful lesson I garnered during my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether reaching out to peers or faculty, asking for help makes a significant difference.
### Assistance from Faculty and Well-Being Support
On the subject of staff, I cannot stress enough how supportive the Materials department is. The lecturers and staff genuinely wish for students to succeed and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. They keep open channels of communication and are always prepared to address any concerns.
Although I didn’t take full advantage of the available pastoral support until the year’s end, I regret not doing so earlier. One of the best choices I made was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are countless opportunities to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My principal takeaway? Embrace the support available to you—it exists for a purpose, and you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained and Looking Forward
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to recognize that many of the anxieties I experienced before and during university were misplaced. With the abundant support from both staff and fellow students, I learned that I was never genuinely alone. More importantly, I discovered how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines while still enjoying moments of fun and relaxation.
This year has been a pathway of development, and I’m eager to see what lies ahead as I progress in my studies in Materials Science and Engineering.
