**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about what the future held. I was preparing to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had previously been shy and introverted, plunging into such a new and challenging setting felt daunting. Reflecting on the past academic year, I can appreciate how much I’ve evolved. It’s been a period of self-exploration, overcoming obstacles, and creating wonderful memories. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting elements of commencing university was the challenge of forming friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, you may resonate with these feelings. On my first day at my student accommodation, a few days prior to the term officially starting, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to go out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently share that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced.

The pivotal moment came when I chose to step out of my comfort zone and engage in light conversation with others who were in a similar situation. Gradually, these exchanges developed into friendships, and I now feel like I have uncovered a second family here at Imperial.

What did I gain from this experience? First, it’s beneficial to take that initial leap of faith early on, even if it feels intimidating. If you’re not ready yet, that’s perfectly okay—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Secondly, the best approach is to simply be yourself. With such a diverse student community, you are bound to encounter individuals who align with your interests and values.

### Addressing Academic Challenges

Adapting to the academic demands and heightened complexity of university-level coursework was another significant challenge. The shift from A-levels to university was striking, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when you observe others studying and seemingly thriving.

What supported me through these periods was the understanding that everyone faces similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that your peers are too. The essential lesson I learned during my first year is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or staff. This is perhaps the most crucial takeaway: don’t hesitate to ask for help.

### The Value of Supportive Staff

One of the highlights of my experience has been the remarkable support from the Materials Science faculty. They truly care about student success and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and were always available to address our concerns.

While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had sought it sooner. Stepping into the role of a well-being representative for my year was another significant decision I made at the beginning of the year, and it ended up being one of the best choices I could have made. This position allowed me to form connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable.

My recommendation? Make the most of the support systems available to you. Whether it’s academic assistance, pastoral care, or simply getting to know your professors, you can never have too much help.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxieties I felt—before and during university—were unwarranted. There is a wealth of support accessible, whether from faculty or fellow students, to assist you in navigating any challenges.

This year has shown me that I am never truly alone, even when circumstances seem overwhelming. It has also taught me how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and fun.

As I look ahead, I am thankful for the personal growth I’ve undergone and excited for what lies ahead. To anyone gearing up to start their university adventure: embrace the challenges, take those daring steps, and remember that help is always available when you need it.
