**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and self-doubt as I got ready to embark on my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Having always been a bit shy and reserved, stepping into the unfamiliar felt daunting. Reflecting on the past academic year, I can recognize the significant growth I’ve experienced. It has been a journey filled with personal growth, challenges, and lots of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting initial hurdles was forging friendships. For many incoming students, this is a primary concern about beginning university, and I certainly felt the same. On my first day in student housing, right before the term started, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Now, looking back, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. Here at Imperial and within my program, I’ve discovered a second family. It all commenced with casual chats with individuals who were as apprehensive as I was.
What did I glean from this situation? Taking that first step of faith is essential. If you feel unsure or uncomfortable at first, don’t stress—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. In such a diverse student community, you are bound to meet those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Obstacles
Another crucial challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the leap from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed and doubt your capabilities, especially when observing others studying and seemingly having it all sorted out.
What aided me was understanding that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping something, it’s likely others are facing the same issue. The key takeaway is to reach out for assistance—whether from fellow students or teaching staff. This has been perhaps the most important lesson I’ve picked up during my inaugural year: never hesitate to ask for help.
### The Value of Supportive Personnel
On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department have been wonderful. They are genuinely invested in students’ success and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open communication and addressed our issues.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had made use of it sooner. Becoming a year well-being representative was one significant step I took at the year’s onset, and it proved to be an excellent choice. It allowed me to connect with staff, leading to invaluable relationships.
There are numerous avenues to interact with staff, and I strongly encourage taking advantage of these chances. Whether through formal roles or informal chats, establishing these connections can greatly enhance your experience. My main takeaway is straightforward: don’t hesitate to tap into the resources and support systems available to you.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I realize that much of the anxiety I felt—prior to and during university—was often unwarranted. With an extensive array of support options available, from faculty to fellow students, I was never truly isolated. This year taught me how to manage the stress of examinations and deadlines while still enjoying moments of happiness and fun.
If I could share a single piece of advice with new students, it would be this: embrace the challenges, take those bold steps, and remember that assistance is always accessible. University is a journey of growth, and with the right attitude and support, you will flourish.
