**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was preparing to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase felt quite daunting. Now, as I reflect on a year filled with development, difficulties, and unforgettable moments, I can appreciate all that I’ve learned and how much I’ve grown.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might relate—it’s a prevalent worry. On my first day in student housing, just a few days prior to the official start of term, I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to anyone.
Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly assert that I’ve found some of the greatest friends I’ve ever known. These relationships have become like a second family to me, both within my program and throughout the university. What facilitated this journey? It all began with casual conversations and connecting with others who were feeling the same way.
The main takeaway? Take that initial leap of faith early. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be countless icebreaker events and chances to meet others. And above all, be authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you are bound to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more intense. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others studying and excel.
What assisted me in navigating this was understanding that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re finding it difficult to grasp something, it’s likely that others are struggling too. The best strategy is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or teaching staff. Learning how to ask for support is perhaps the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.
### The Caring Staff
Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials department are truly exceptional. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our issues and providing guidance.
While I didn’t fully utilize the supportive resources available until late in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. Taking on the role of a well-being representative was one of the courageous steps I took at the start of the year, and it turned out to be a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to form relationships with staff members, which proved to be invaluable.
There are numerous opportunities to engage with your lecturers and tutors, and I strongly encourage you to take full advantage of them. The assistance they provide is intended for a purpose—don’t hesitate to utilize it.
### Insights Gained
Looking back, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the immense support available from both staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated.
I’ve learned how to strike a balance between having fun and managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines. Most importantly, I’ve developed in ways I never expected, and I’m eager to see what the next phase of my university journey will bring.
If you are about to embark on your own university experience, remember: take that leap, be true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You can do this!
