**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and doubts about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For an individual who had always been somewhat reserved, venturing into unfamiliar territory seemed quite intimidating. As I reflect on an academic year brimming with personal development, challenges, and unforgettable moments, I find myself contemplating what I’ve discovered and how much I’ve progressed.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most frightening elements of commencing university was the idea of establishing friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might share the same concerns. On my first day at student accommodation, just days before the term officially commenced, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and engage with others.

Now, looking back, I can assert with confidence that I have forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve encountered here have essentially become a second family. It all commenced with brief chats and the realization that everyone else was similarly apprehensive.

What did I take away from this experience? Seize the moment early on. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Most importantly, remain true to yourself. With the vibrant community at Imperial, you’re certain to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Navigating the academic pressures of university presented another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university coursework was evident, and moving from the first term to the second proved to be even more demanding. It’s easy to begin doubting your capabilities when you observe others studying rigorously, making you feel as though you’re lagging behind.

What aided me was the realization that I was not in this alone. If I struggled with a concept, others likely were too. The key was recognizing when to seek assistance—be it from peers or faculty. I firmly believe this is a vital skill to cultivate in your first year.

### Supportive Faculty and Pastoral Assistance
A highlight of my experience has been the exceptional support from the Materials department staff. They are genuinely invested in our success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open lines of communication with us, addressing our concerns and offering direction.

Although I didn’t fully make use of the pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was a leap of faith, yet it became a gratifying experience. It enabled me to establish connections with staff members, which proved immensely beneficial.

If there’s one piece of counsel I’d impart, it’s to seize the support available to you. Whether you need academic assistance or pastoral guidance, don’t hesitate to reach out. You can never have too much support.

### Essential Insights from My First Year
As I look back on this year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. Thanks to the extensive support from staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated.

This year has taught me how to navigate the stress of exams and deadlines while also finding joy and fun. It’s been a transformative journey, and I’m thankful for the obstacles and victories that have shaped my experience.

To anyone gearing up to start university: embrace the apprehension, take the leap, and remember that assistance is always available.
