**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, apprehension, and doubt regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been shy and reserved, plunging into this new chapter felt daunting. Now, reflecting on a year filled with personal growth, challenges, and unforgettable moments, I recognize how much I’ve grown and how far I’ve progressed.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting parts of starting university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re a future student, this may also be one of your significant concerns. On my first day in student accommodation, just a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. These friendships have truly become my second family here at Imperial.
So, what sparked this change? It began with light conversations. I discovered that everyone around was experiencing similar feelings of nervousness. Taking that initial step to engage with others was truly transformative. If you’re feeling hesitant or uncertain, fret not—there are numerous ice-breaker events and chances to meet people. The crucial lesson I learned is to embrace your true self. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you are sure to find peers who align with your interests and values.
### Addressing Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the academic demands and the significant leap in rigor from A-levels posed yet another significant challenge. The shift from the first term to the second term felt particularly overwhelming. It’s easy to become disheartened and question your capabilities, especially when witnessing others studying with confidence.
What supported me during this time was the understanding that I wasn’t alone in my struggles. Everyone encounters difficulties, and if you find something confusing, it’s likely that others do too. The secret is to seek assistance—be it from classmates or faculty. This may well be the most essential skill to cultivate during your first year.
### Assistance from Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and support staff genuinely care about students’ success and understand the challenges we face. They maintain open lines of communication throughout the year and are consistently eager to assist.
Although I only took advantage of pastoral support towards the end of the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. Initially, I took a brave step by becoming a year well-being representative, which provided me the opportunity to connect with staff members. This proved to be an invaluable experience. Whether through formal roles or casual encounters, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the best actions you can undertake for yourself. My key takeaway from this? Utilize the support around you—you can never have too much help.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I felt before and during university was largely unwarranted. With the ample support from both faculty and fellow students, there’s always someone ready to help. I’ve learned that I’m never actually on my own, and I’ve figured out how to juggle exam stress and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
As I look ahead, I’m eager to see what the next chapter will bring. If you’re on the verge of starting your university adventure, remember that the obstacles you encounter will foster your growth, and the relationships you build will enhance your journey in ways you may not yet foresee.
