**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt as I geared up to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone typically shy and introverted, plunging into this new phase of life felt formidable. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments, I can unequivocally say it has been a life-changing experience. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting aspects of beginning university was meeting new individuals and establishing friendships. If you’re a future student, this may be a concern of yours as well. On my initial day in student housing, I spent countless hours tucked away in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I’ve built some of the most rewarding friendships of my life. These individuals have become my second family, both within my program and throughout the university.

What enabled me to surmount this challenge? Taking that first courageous step. Even if you’re not prepared to jump in immediately, don’t fret—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to interact with others. The secret is to be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to encounter individuals who share your interests and values.

### Addressing Academic Obstacles

Adapting to the academic requirements of university was another substantial challenge. The transition from A-levels to university-level courses was pronounced, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more significant. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your abilities, especially when you perceive others thriving.

What assisted me in navigating this? Reminding myself that I wasn’t solitary. Everyone encounters difficulties, and if you’re confused about a topic, others likely are as well. The most crucial lesson I acquired was the importance of asking for help—whether from classmates or faculty. Seeking assistance is not a sign of inadequacy; it’s a vital skill that can significantly affect your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

A notable aspect of my journey has been the remarkable support from the Materials Science faculty. They genuinely care about student success and understand the challenges we experience. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication, addressing our issues and providing guidance.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had utilized it earlier. Taking on the responsibility of a year well-being representative allowed me to build connections with the faculty, which proved invaluable. Whether through official roles or casual conversations, engaging with your lecturers and support staff can significantly enrich your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of the resources and assistance available—you can never have too much support.

### Essential Lessons from My First Year

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the abundant support available from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me how to juggle the stresses of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and fun.

To anyone getting ready to embark on their university journey: embrace the challenges, take those risks, and don’t hesitate to reach out for help when needed. University is a period of maturation, and with the right mindset and support, it can be an exceptionally fulfilling experience.
