**Thoughts on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and ambiguity about what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unfamiliar was quite outside my comfort zone. Reflecting on it now, this past academic year has been a remarkable journey—one characterized by personal development, obstacles, and immense joy. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was the process of making friends. This concern is a common one for many incoming students, and I certainly felt the weight of it. On my first day at my student accommodation, just prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too intimidated to step out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can state with confidence that I have formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced.
The breakthrough came when I decided to take the initiative to engage in light conversation with fellow students who were also navigating similar feelings. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with those early discussions. My recommendation? Make that move early in your journey. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous ice-breaking activities and opportunities to interact with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you will undoubtedly find people who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to the Academic Shift
Another major obstacle was acclimating to the new workload and the escalated complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university studies was markedly distinct, and the shift from the first term to the subsequent term seemed even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others who appear to be thriving.
What proved beneficial for me was the recognition that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you struggle to grasp a topic, it’s likely that others are in the same situation. The crucial lesson here is to seek assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, reaching out for help is essential. This could very well be the most vital skill to cultivate in your initial year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the topic of support, the personnel in the Materials department have been outstanding. They are genuinely invested in the success of students and have a thorough understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open and demonstrated understanding towards our challenges.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Taking the initiative to become a well-being representative for my year was one of the early steps I took, and it resulted in a fulfilling experience. It helped me forge connections with staff members, which has proven invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and pursuing these connections can enhance your university experience significantly. My takeaway? Make the most of the support resources at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve concluded that the apprehension I felt before university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive support available from both staff and fellow students, assistance is always within reach. This year has illustrated to me that I am never truly alone and that balancing the stresses of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and laughter is entirely feasible.
To anyone getting ready to embark on their university adventure: embrace the challenges, take those bold steps, and remember that support is consistently present. You’ve got this!
