**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the future. I was set to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new adventure felt daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year packed with development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment, I can’t help but contemplate the insights I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.

### Conquering the Friend-Making Challenge
One of the most daunting parts of commencing university was forging friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely you have similar concerns. On my first day in student housing, just days before the term began, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve built some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced.

These bonds didn’t materialize instantly; they started with incremental steps—such as engaging in light conversation with others who were equally new and apprehensive. Over the course of time, these interactions evolved into what feels like a second family here at Imperial. My main takeaway? Take that initial leap of faith. Even if you don’t feel fully prepared, don’t stress—there are plenty of icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. And above all, be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re bound to encounter individuals who share your passions and beliefs.

### Addressing the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexities of the course materials. The leap from A-levels to university was distinct, and the adjustment from the first term to the second term felt even tougher. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your skills when you observe others studying and appearing to have everything under control.

What guided me through this was the understanding that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you find something difficult to grasp, there’s a good chance others are as well. The crucial element is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to request help is, in my view, one of the most crucial abilities to cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of support, the personnel in the Materials department have been outstanding. They genuinely desire students to flourish and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept lines of communication open with us and were always willing to respond to our inquiries.

Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support offered until the year was nearing its close, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. One of the wisest choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to interact with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. Whether through formal roles or informal exchanges, getting acquainted with the staff is among the best things you can do for yourself. My recommendation? Make the most of the resources and support structures available—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained
In retrospect, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced prior to and during university was largely unfounded. With the abundant support from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. I’ve learned how to manage the stress from exams and deadlines while also savoring moments of happiness, and I’ve evolved in ways I never thought were possible.

As I progress, I’m thankful for the challenges, development, and friendships that have characterized my inaugural year. To anyone on the brink of starting their own university experience: take that leap, embrace the support surrounding you, and have faith that you will discover your niche.
