**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced a whirlwind of emotions—nervousness, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was preparing to begin my adventure as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has generally been introverted and reserved, the thought of venturing into the unknown was intimidating. Reflecting back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles to overcome, and memorable experiences. So, what have I gained, and how do I feel now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendship
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming new friendships. For numerous incoming students, this stands out as one of the primary concerns regarding university life, and I was certainly included in that group. On my initial day at my student residence, I spent the whole time sequestered in my room, far too anxious to step outside and meet anyone.
Now, looking at my present self, I can affirmatively state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships in my life. My companions here have become akin to a second family, and it all commenced with that initial step—striking up casual conversations with others feeling just as apprehensive.
What did I take away from this? I discovered that making the effort at the beginning of the year is always rewarding. If you aren’t prepared or don’t feel at ease immediately, that’s perfectly normal! There are numerous icebreaker events and avenues to connect with others. Most significantly, I learned that staying true to yourself is crucial. With such a rich tapestry of backgrounds at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Facing the Academic Challenge
Another significant challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university learning was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s simple to become overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when observing others seeming to thrive academically.
What aided me in overcoming this was the realization that we are all navigating similar struggles. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely that others are grappling with it too. The most crucial lesson I acquired during my freshman year was to seek assistance. Whether from classmates or faculty, reaching out for help is invaluable.
### The Value of Encouraging Staff
Regarding support, the personnel in the Materials department have been remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and show understanding towards the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and readily addressed our issues.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, and in retrospect, I wish I had reached out sooner. Early in the year, I made a bold choice to become a year well-being representative, which enabled me to foster connections with the staff. This proved to be a remarkably enriching experience.
There are many paths to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My primary takeaway here is to seize the help and resources available—you can never have too much support!
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the apprehension I felt—both leading up to university and during my initial year—was often unfounded. With a vast array of support from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. I have learned how to navigate the stress of exams and deadlines while embracing moments filled with joy and enjoyment.
Reflecting on my journey, I recognize the degree of my growth, and I am eager to continue this path. To those preparing to embark on their university experience, my guidance is straightforward: take that leap, remain authentic, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You are not alone, and the journey will be far more rewarding than you could ever envisage.
