**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed by nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new chapter felt like a daunting task. Now, reflecting on a year of academic progress, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment, I can assert that it has been a life-changing experience. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

### Conquering the Fear of Socializing

One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered was forging friendships. Embarking on a university experience can be intimidating, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On my first day at the student residence, just prior to the semester starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to step out and greet others.

Fast forward to now, and I’m thrilled to report that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I could ever hope for. These bonds have blossomed into a second family for me, both within my program and throughout the university. How did this transformation occur? It began with casual conversations and connecting with others who shared my apprehensions.

What have I learned? Taking that first step of courage at the year’s outset is essential. Even if you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, fear not—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. Above all, be authentic. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to come across individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Shift

Adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material was another critical challenge. The leap from A-levels to university studies was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more daunting. It’s easy to feel encumbered or question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others studying and ponder if you’re keeping pace.

What aided me in those moments was the reassurance that everyone experiences similar challenges. If you’re struggling with a concept, it’s likely others are as well. The key is to seek assistance—this may very well be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Whether reaching out to fellow students or faculty, don’t shy away from requesting help.

### The Importance of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of faculty, I cannot stress enough how remarkable the staff in the Materials department are. Their dedication to student success and their understanding of our difficulties are commendable. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and demonstrated empathy towards our challenges.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support at my disposal until the latter part of the academic year, but looking back, I wish I had tapped into it sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a courageous step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position helped me establish connections with faculty members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are many avenues available to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My principal takeaway? Make the most of the support available to you—there’s no such thing as too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

In reflecting on my first year, it’s clear that the anxieties I experienced—both before and during my university journey—were often exaggerated. With the extensive support from both faculty and fellow students, there’s always a helping hand. This year has shown me that I’m never truly alone, and balancing the pressures of exams and deadlines with joyful moments is indeed achievable.

Therefore, to anyone gearing up to commence their university adventure: embrace the difficulties, take those courageous leaps, and remember that support is perpetually close at hand.
