When many Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they conjure an expansive, enigmatic, and verdant campus bustling with wildlife and flora rarely found at other locations such as South Kensington or White City. In numerous respects, they are correct—every representation of Silwood Park is accurate!

As a member of this lesser-known ensemble within Imperial, I wish to underscore the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.

A glimpse into Silwood Park

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and featuring habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” woodland, and expansive meadows. A quick inquiry on iNaturalist, an application designed for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations globally among a network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on the grounds. Additionally, a search on eBird shows that 111 bird species have been identified on campus to date.

Of particular interest, Silwood Park hosts numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more recognized studies executed on-site.

The student experience at Silwood Park

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students engaged in projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us are members of various clubs based at Silwood Park. Some notable examples include:

  • Chicken Club – which looks after the chickens located behind our residence halls
  • Book Club – which regularly convenes to discuss intriguing literature
  • Gardening Club – which oversees the gardens in our community allotments
  • Conservation Club – which arranges nature walks and conservation-related activities for students at Silwood Park Campus.

As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in events organized by clubs in South Kensington!

Informally, we have clubs that partake in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), utilizing either the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.

Apart from club events and classes, we host numerous community-driven gatherings on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that plans and executes these activities, ensuring a lively and dynamic student life! Recently, we organized the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over multiple weeks, along with our traditional Chinese New Year celebration at the year’s start, where everyone united to create dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. Additionally, we’ve held community-arranged parties in honor of global festivities (like Carnival) or simply to celebrate the joy of togetherness.

However, my favorite campus activity has to be the weekly pub quiz, coordinated by our student community. It has become a Silwood tradition that the quiz losers host the next one, and I can proudly state I’ve organized the highest number of quizzes this year. Though I’ve lost many quizzes due to my inadequate general knowledge, there’s always great enjoyment with wonderful company and a nice pint of beer.

Silwood Park: my sanctuary away from home

Even though it’s a 30-minute stroll from the lively essence of urban life (like the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed monotonous or unfulfilling. Along with a wealth of events and activities, we enjoy a friendly and inviting community of students from across the globe. We share a passion for nature, our stunning campus landscape, and, most importantly, each other’s companionship. We’re a tight-knit group that revels in stargazing amidst the winter chill on the open field adjacent to our bar, watching the
