**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the path ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introspective and cautious, plunging into the unknown felt quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with personal development, trials, and unforgettable moments, I recognize how transformative this journey has truly been. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships
Among the most daunting challenges I encountered at the onset of university was the task of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might resonate with the same fears. On my first day in the student residence, just prior to the start of term, I spent a whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to go out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known.
The pivotal moment came when I made the decision to take a chance and engage in small conversations with others in similar predicaments. That minor action led to the creation of a second family here at Imperial, both in my course and beyond. The critical lesson I learned? Make that move early on. Even if it feels daunting, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Above all, be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who share your passions and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the academic expectations of university was yet another substantial challenge. The shift from A-levels to university-level studies proved tough, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others appearing to excel. Nevertheless, I soon understood that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re finding it hard to grasp a concept, it’s likely that many others are too.
The most significant lesson I internalized during this period was the necessity of asking for assistance. Whether it’s from your classmates or the academic staff, seeking help is vital. Don’t be shy about reaching out—collaboration and effective communication are essential for tackling the academic challenges of your first year.
### The Supportive Materials Department
One of the most remarkable aspects of my journey has been the outstanding support from the Materials Department staff. They sincerely desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept channels of communication open and offered a wide array of resources to help us succeed.
Though I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative from the start facilitated my connection with staff members, which ended up being an invaluable experience. There are numerous ways to foster relationships with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway? Make the most of the support that’s available to you—there’s no such thing as too much help!
### Insights Gained
In reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I experienced—both before beginning university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. Thanks to the abundant support from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me how to navigate the stress from exams and deadlines while enjoying moments of happiness and self-exploration.
If I could offer one piece of guidance to future students, it would be this: welcome the challenges, take those leaps of faith, and don’t hesitate to rely on the support systems surrounding you. University is a period of growth, and with the appropriate mindset, it can be an extraordinarily fulfilling experience.
