**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was enveloped in anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the future. I was preparing to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had previously been timid and withdrawn, venturing into the unknown was daunting. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and a plethora of unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was cultivating friendships. For numerous incoming students, this is a major concern when beginning university, and I was no different. On my initial day in student housing, just days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too intimidated to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to today, and I can assuredly proclaim that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve connected with here—within my course and throughout the university—have become my second family. It simply took a bit of casual conversation with others who were equally apprehensive.
What did I discover from this? Taking that first leap of faith is vital. If you’re not immediately ready or comfortable, don’t stress—there are a multitude of ice-breaker events and activities created to facilitate connections with others. Most importantly, be authentically yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the workload and complexity of university-level material was another challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel inundated or question your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving classmates.
What assisted me in navigating this was realizing that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The crucial step is to ask for assistance—whether from your fellow students or faculty members. This is perhaps the most significant lesson I absorbed during my first year: don’t hesitate to seek help.
### The Supportive Staff in Materials
On the topic of support, the personnel in the Materials department have been exceptional. They sincerely desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, listening to our concerns and providing guidance.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the end of the year, and I wish I had started sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a chance by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be tremendously beneficial. Whether through formal roles or informal interactions, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the best things you can do for yourself. My most significant takeaway? Utilize the resources and support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the year, it has taught me that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during university—was largely unwarranted. With the extensive array of support options available, from faculty to fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned how to manage the stress arising from exams and deadlines while also cherishing moments of joy and fun, and I’ve matured immensely as an individual.
If you’re about to commence your own university adventure, remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious. Take those leaps of faith, embrace the support surrounding you, and don’t forget to enjoy the journey.
