**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I had just begun my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and quiet, plunging into the unfamiliar felt like a daunting task. Now, reflecting on a year filled with development, obstacles, and happiness, I can assert it has been a life-changing experience. So, what has this year imparted to me, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating hurdles I encountered was establishing friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, you might resonate with those feelings. On my first day in the dorms, right before classes commenced, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too nervous to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I’m delighted to say I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had—friends who genuinely feel like a second family.
The secret? Taking that initial step. Engaging in light conversation with others in the same boat was all it took to begin forging connections. If you feel anxious, rest assured—there will be many icebreaker events and chances to mingle. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to come across individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the heavy workload and academic demands was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university-level material was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second appeared even more daunting. It’s all too easy to feel crushed or question your competence, especially when observing others who seem to excel.
What aided me was the understanding that everyone else is navigating similar challenges. If you’re finding a topic difficult, it’s likely others are too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning how to ask for help is arguably the most crucial skill you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
A standout aspect of my experience has been the amazing support provided by the faculty in the Materials department. They truly want their students to thrive and are understanding of the struggles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open dialogue and offered a wealth of resources to help us through tough times.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had capitalized on it sooner. Stepping into the position of a year well-being representative was a bold move for me, but it turned out to be a fulfilling endeavor. It enabled me to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which proved to be priceless. Whether through formal roles or informal chats, familiarizing yourself with the faculty is one of the most beneficial actions you can take. Utilize the support on offer—there’s no such thing as too much help!
### Insights Gained
This year has revealed to me that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to and during my university journey—was mostly unwarranted. With strong support from staff and peers, I realized I was never genuinely alone. I also learned how to juggle the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines with instances of joy and enjoyment.
Looking back, my first year at Imperial has been a path of self-exploration, growth, and forging connections. If you’re on the brink of starting your own university experience, welcome the challenges, take those brave steps, and remember—you’re never solitary in this expedition.
