**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed by nervousness, anxiety, and uncertainty as I prepared to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As an individual who had traditionally been introverted and reserved, venturing into the unfamiliar was well outside my comfort zone. Now, upon reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a time of substantial personal development, challenges faced, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the prospect of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, it’s probable that this is a concern of yours as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days ahead of the term’s start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever enjoyed.
Imperial has evolved into my second family, and it all initiated with modest steps—such as engaging in light conversation with individuals who were equally anxious. My primary insight? Take the initiative early. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. And above all, stay true to yourself. With a diverse array of individuals across the course and campus, you’re sure to discover those who resonate with you.
### Addressing the Academic Obstacles
Adapting to the demands and complexities of university-level coursework was another challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and moving from the first term into the second felt even more daunting. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you’re lagging behind.
What aided me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone is in similar circumstances. If you’re having difficulty grasping something, it’s likely that others are as well. The crucial factor is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the teaching personnel. Learning to request support is perhaps the most crucial skill you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Supportive Faculty in Materials Science
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department have been remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and show understanding toward the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open, addressing our worries and offering guidance.
Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, I regret not doing so earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the bold moves I made early on. This role enabled me to cultivate relationships with faculty, which proved immensely valuable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My recommendation? Make the most of the support available—there’s no such thing as too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting back, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even during it—was largely unfounded. With an abundance of support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of laughter and enjoyment.
Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a life-altering experience, brimming with development, knowledge, and friendships I will treasure for a lifetime.
