**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of embarking on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been shy and introverted, plunging into this new experience felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with personal development, trials, and happiness, I can appreciate just how much I’ve gained and how far I’ve progressed.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was making connections. If you’re an incoming student, this might resonate with you as well. On my first day in student housing, just a few days before the term officially kicked off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve encountered here have turned into my second family, both within my program and throughout the university. All it took was to step outside of my comfort zone and strike up small talks with others who were feeling just as I was.
What’s the takeaway? Taking that initial step—regardless of how intimidating it may seem—is always beneficial. If you’re not prepared to jump in right away, that’s completely okay! Numerous icebreaker events and activities are tailored to assist you in connecting with others. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a diverse student body, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic load and complexity was another significant hurdle. The transition from A-levels to university-level coursework was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the subsequent one felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing others studying and appearing to succeed.
What aided me most was the realization that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find yourself struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are facing the same dilemma. The essential strategy is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. This was one of the most vital lessons I absorbed in my first year: don’t hesitate to reach out for support.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely strive for student success and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they ensured continuous communication with us and were always available to address our inquiries.
I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the year was nearing its close, and I regret not doing so earlier. At the year’s beginning, I took a proactive step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to deepen my relationships with the staff, which proved to be invaluable. There are myriad ways to engage with faculty members, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway? Leverage the resources and support networks at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt—both prior to and during my university experience—was often unwarranted. Numerous support resources exist, from staff to fellow students, to help you tackle the challenges. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone and that it’s viable to juggle the stress from assessments and deadlines while also enjoying moments of happiness and fun.
Beginning university can feel like a plunge into the unknown, but it also represents a remarkable opportunity for growth, connection, and self-discovery. If I could offer one piece of guidance to new students, it would be this: embrace the leap, seek help when necessary, and remember to savor the journey.
