**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was about to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been quiet and introverted, plunging into this new phase was a rather intimidating prospect. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and numerous moments of happiness. But what exactly have I acquired in terms of knowledge, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was establishing friendships. The onset of university can be quite overwhelming, and if you’re a prospective student perusing this, it might also be among your greatest worries. On my inaugural day in student housing, merely a few days before the semester officially commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to today, and I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known—friends who have become like a second family. It simply required stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in light chit-chat with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings.
So, what have I gained from this? Taking that bold step at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease right away, that’s perfectly alright! Numerous icebreaker events and activities are specifically organized to assist you in connecting with others. Above all, I’ve learned that authenticity is essential. With the vast diversity at Imperial, you’re certain to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another notable obstacle was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was quite evident, and the transition from the first term to the second term seemed even more challenging. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your capabilities when surrounded by accomplished peers.
What aided me in persevering was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, there’s a good chance you’re not the only one. Seeking assistance became my most important lesson during the first year. Whether it’s reaching out to classmates or asking for guidance from faculty, don’t hesitate to seek clarification.
### Support from the Materials Department
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science and Engineering department at Imperial truly stands out. The staff genuinely desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing any issues we raised.
While I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until the later part of the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative was one of the substantial leaps I took at the start of the year, and it turned out to be exceedingly fulfilling. It provided me with the opportunity to forge connections with staff members, which proved invaluable.
There are ample chances to engage with faculty, and I wholeheartedly recommend seizing these opportunities. Whether through formal roles or informal exchanges, fostering these relations can significantly impact your experience. My greatest lesson? Don’t hesitate to tap into the support systems available—there’s no such thing as excessive assistance!
### Insights Gained
Upon reflection, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even during my time here—was frequently unfounded. With the abundant support offered by both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve gained insights on managing the pressures of examinations and deadlines while also carving out moments of joy and fun.
Entering university is a substantial leap, and feeling uneasy is entirely normal. However, with time, effort, and a readiness to embrace new experiences, you will find your footing and flourish.
