**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, dread, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to commence my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging headlong into this new phase felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on a year marked by growth, obstacles, and remarkable experiences, I recognize how much I’ve gained and how much I’ve progressed.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting parts of starting university was the thought of forging new friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might share similar feelings. On my first day in student housing, I spent hours sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships of my life. These bonds have become my second family, both within my program and throughout the university.

So, what have I discovered? The secret is to take that initial leap of faith early on. Even if uncertainty or discomfort lingers, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to bond with others. Most importantly, remain true to yourself. With such a diverse environment at Imperial, you’re sure to connect with individuals who share your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Obstacles

Acclimating to the workload and academic demands was another considerable challenge. The shift from A-levels to university study was significant, and the jump from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inadequate when observing others seemingly thriving, but it’s crucial to remember that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are as well.

The most essential lesson I acquired was to seek assistance. Whether from classmates or teaching staff, reaching out for help is vital. Don’t shy away from clarifying uncertainties or asking for direction—this skill will benefit you greatly throughout your university experience.

### The Significance of Community and Support

One of the highlights of my experience has been the immense support from the Materials Science faculty. They truly care about our success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication, addressing our needs and offering guidance.

Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was a bold step for me, but it turned out to be one of the best choices I made. It enabled me to form meaningful connections with staff members, which became invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal interactions, getting to know the faculty is one of the best investments you can make for yourself. Utilize the available support systems—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

In retrospect, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before starting university—and even during the course of the year—was largely unfounded. With the extensive support from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to manage the stress from exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and enjoyment, and I’ve grown increasingly confident in myself throughout this journey.

As I gear up for the next stage of my university adventure, I’m thankful for the challenges, the friendships, and the lessons that have helped shape me. If you’re about to embark on your own journey, keep this in mind: take that leap, stay true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You’ve got this!
