**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiousness, apprehension, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had previously been shy and introverted, venturing into the unknown felt incredibly daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment, I cannot help but contemplate the insights I’ve gained and how much I have evolved.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the onset of university was the task of making friends. This concern frequently weighs heavily on prospective students, and I was no different. On my initial day in student accommodation, just days before the term officially commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, far too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships I have ever had. The individuals I’ve encountered here have become akin to a second family for me. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with others who were experiencing similar uncertainties.
What did I take away from this? Taking that first leap at the beginning of the year is essential. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I discovered that being true to oneself is the most effective strategy. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the demands of the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the jump from the first term to the second felt even larger. It was not always simple to maintain confidence, especially when I observed others studying and questioned my own abilities.
What supported me during those instances was the recognition that everyone was grappling with similar issues. If I didn’t grasp a concept, it was likely that my peers were struggling too. The crucial lesson here? Never hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from classmates or faculty, obtaining support is one of the most beneficial skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Regarding faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial stands out remarkably. The professors and tutors are genuinely invested in students’ success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They foster open communication with students throughout the year and are always eager to address any concerns.
I didn’t fully make use of the pastoral support available until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. One proactive step I took early in the year was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to forge solid connections with faculty members, which proved to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Leverage the support systems at your disposal—there’s no such thing as too much help!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I realize that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during university—was often misplaced. With the variety of support options provided by faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a journey of personal development, resilience, and connection. For anyone gearing up to begin their own university journey, remember to take that plunge, be yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You’ll be astounded by what you can accomplish.
