**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension, fear, and uncertainty as I got ready to start my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who was once introverted and timid, plunging into this new phase felt overwhelming. Now, reflecting on a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and an abundance of enjoyment, I can’t help but consider the insights I’ve gained and how much I have evolved.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections
A particularly daunting aspect of beginning university was socializing. If you’re a potential student reading this, you might relate. I vividly recall my first day in student housing—spending the entire time sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. These bonds have become my second family, both within my course and throughout the university.
What did I take away from this experience? The crucial lesson is to make that initial move without delay. Even if you feel uncertain or uneasy, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect. Most importantly, just remain true to yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Challenges
Adapting to the demands and scholarly rigor was yet another significant challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Feelings of being overwhelmed or questioning your abilities can easily arise when observing your peers studying and succeeding. However, one essential realization that kept me grounded was that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely others are grappling with the same issue.
The most critical lesson I absorbed was to seek assistance. Whether from fellow students or instructors, reaching out for help is vital. Don’t shy away from clarifying doubts or requesting support—it’s a skill that will benefit you throughout your university experience.
### The Significance of Supportive Staff
A highlight of my experience has been the exceptional backing from the Materials department staff. They are genuinely invested in our success and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept the lines of communication open, addressing our issues and providing valuable guidance.
While I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Accepting the position of a year well-being representative was a courageous step for me, but it proved to be one of my best choices. It facilitated connections with staff members that were extremely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to interact with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My advice? Make the most of the support available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Key Insights
In hindsight, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt before and during university was often unfounded. With the abundant support from both staff and peers, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve mastered the art of balancing examination stress and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment, growing in ways I never anticipated.
To anyone gearing up for their own university experience: welcome challenges, embrace those leaps of faith, and remember that you are not solitary. A network of support is waiting for you, and your experience will be as fulfilling as you decide to make it.
