**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who had always been somewhat introverted, immersing myself in this new era felt quite intimidating. Reflecting now on a year marked by personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences, I can appreciate how much I’ve evolved and progressed.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might also be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day at the student residence, just a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known.

At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—friends who have made this journey genuinely extraordinary. The key to reaching this point was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others who were equally anxious.

The most significant lesson I took away? Make that move at the beginning of the year. Even if you’re unsure, there will be many icebreaker events and chances to meet others. And above all, be your true self. With a vibrant community of students, you’re sure to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Shift in Academic Demands

Adapting to the academic pressures and challenges proved to be another considerable obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university was apparent, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more demanding. It’s natural to feel inundated and question your capabilities, particularly when observing others who appear to be thriving.

What benefitted me tremendously was understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are, too. The essential strategy is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members. This may be the crucial skill to nurture during your initial year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

On the subject of faculty, I cannot stress enough how outstanding the Materials department is. The instructors and support personnel genuinely want you to thrive and are cognizant of the obstacles students encounter. They are approachable, understanding, and maintain an open line of communication throughout the year.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, and I regret not engaging earlier. Utilizing the assistance provided is among the best choices you can make.

At the outset of the year, I took the initiative by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My suggestion? Don’t hesitate to maximize the resources and support networks at your disposal—you can never have too much help!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I experienced—both leading up to and during my time at university—was often unwarranted. There’s a vast array of support available, from faculty to fellow students, to guide you through various challenges.

This year has illustrated to me that I’m never genuinely alone. It has taught me how to manage stress from exams and deadlines alongside moments of enjoyment and leisure. Most importantly, it’s been a year of personal development, affirming that stepping outside your comfort zone can result in remarkable opportunities and experiences.
