**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A little over ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty as I readied myself to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who has always tended to be introverted, plunging into the vast waters of university life seemed overwhelming. However, looking back on an academic year rich with growth, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment, I can assert that it has been a life-changing journey. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the outset of university was the quest to forge friendships. If you’re a potential student perusing this, you may have similar concerns. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days ahead of the official term start, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room, too anxious to emerge and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I’m proud to say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known.
These connections didn’t materialize instantly, but rather started with minor steps—like engaging in light conversation with others who were equally apprehensive. Gradually, I discovered a second family here at Imperial, both within my program and throughout the university. What did I take away from this experience? Taking that first leap of faith is invaluable. If you’re not prepared straight away, there’s no need to fret—there are numerous icebreaking activities and chances to interact with others. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied community of students, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
A further considerable challenge was acclimating to the heavier workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the jump from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become daunted or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you’re measuring up.
What aided me in addressing these hurdles was the realization that everyone is facing similar challenges. If I was struggling with something, it was likely that my peers were too. The main takeaway here? Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, seeking guidance is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate during your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial has been extraordinary. They genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the struggles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open, addressing our issues and providing support.
While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral care until later in the year, I wish I had earlier. Becoming a year well-being representative was one of the bold steps I took at the year’s start, and it proved to be a remarkable choice. It enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which was incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and making those connections can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support offered—you can never receive too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
As I reflect on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during university—was often unwarranted. With the abundance of support from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has shown me how to manage stress from exams and deadlines while still cherishing moments of joy and laughter.
Thus, to anyone on the verge of commencing their university journey: welcome the challenges, take those courageous leaps, and remember that support is always nearby.
