**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty as I prepared to commence my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been quite shy and introverted, stepping into the unknown seemed daunting. Now, as I reflect on an academic year filled with personal growth, challenges, and unforgettable experiences, I recognize just how much I’ve gained and the distance I’ve traveled.
### Confronting the Initial Challenge: Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the task of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, you might share this concern. On my first day in student housing, I spent countless hours in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Flash forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever known—friends who truly feel like family.
So, what changed? It all began with light conversation and finding common ground with other newcomers like myself. My main takeaway? Don’t hesitate to put yourself out there at the start of the year. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be an abundance of ice-breakers and events designed to help you connect with others. Most importantly, remain authentic to yourself. With such a wide-ranging community at Imperial, you’re likely to discover individuals who align with your interests and beliefs.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands and workload was yet another considerable challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s common to feel overloaded or question your capabilities, especially when you observe others appearing to excel.
What aided me during this transition was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The crucial part is reaching out for assistance—be it from fellow students or faculty. Learning to seek help could be the most crucial skill you cultivate in your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of help, the team in the Materials Department has been fantastic. They truly care about the success of students and are understanding of the hurdles we face. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open and were always ready to address our issues.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had approached it sooner. Taking initiative at the year’s outset also enabled me to serve as a year well-being representative. This position let me foster connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. Whether through formal roles or more informal encounters, building relationships with the staff is one of the smartest moves you can make for yourself. My suggestion? Make the most of the available resources and support—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
This past year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and throughout university—was frequently baseless. With a wealth of support from both staff and fellow students, I realized that I was never truly isolated. More importantly, I learned how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.
Reflecting on it all, my first year at Imperial has been a profoundly transformative journey. It has been a path of self-discovery, resilience, and connection. To anyone gearing up for their own university journey: embrace the obstacles, seek support, and make sure to savor the experience.
