**Thoughts on My Initial Year of Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, jumping into the unfamiliar felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on a year of academic growth, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment, I can appreciate how much I’ve learned and progressed.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was establishing friendships. For many incoming students, this is a primary worry when entering university, and I was no different. On my first day in student housing, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, far too anxious to venture out and meet anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently claim I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced.
The secret? Taking that first step. It all began with casual conversations with individuals who were experiencing the same feelings. With time, I found a second family here at Imperial, both in my program and beyond. If there’s one lesson I’ve taken to heart, it’s that staying true to yourself is the most effective strategy. With such a diverse array of people around the university, you’re sure to connect with those who share your passions and principles. And if you’re hesitant to dive in right away, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people throughout the year.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the workload and intellectual demands was another significant obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel adrift and question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others apparently thriving.
What aided me the most was the realization that everyone was facing similar challenges. If I struggled with a topic, there were likely others grappling with it as well. The most crucial lesson I learned was to seek assistance—whether from peers or academic staff. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness; it’s an essential skill that can greatly enhance your experience in your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
One of the most notable aspects of my time here has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science faculty. They sincerely want students to succeed and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our concerns and providing assistance.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had made use of it earlier. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was among the early risks I took, and it emerged as a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. Whether through formal positions or casual chats, getting acquainted with your lecturers and tutors is one of the best actions you can take for your own growth. My primary insight? Make the most of the support offered—you can never receive too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even during the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive support available from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve mastered the art of balancing the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and leisure.
Looking back, I recognize how much I’ve developed, both in my studies and personally. Beginning university may seem akin to stepping into the abyss, but with patience, encouragement, and a willingness to take chances, it can transform into one of the most fulfilling experiences of your life.
