**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxious excitement as I readied myself for the adventure of being a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who had always been introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar was far outside my comfort sphere. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with growth, challenges, and memorable occasions, I can assert it was a life-changing period. But what insights did I gain, and where has this journey taken me?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating elements of starting university was the idea of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might be concerned about this too. I can clearly recall my first day in student housing—I stayed cooped up in my room all day, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
The pivotal moment came when I resolved to take a chance and engage in brief dialogues with others who were just as new to this experience as I was. Through those early exchanges, I discovered a second family at Imperial, both in my course and beyond.
So, what’s the lesson? Take that chance early, even if it feels awkward. If you’re not ready to dive in immediately, that’s alright—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to connect with peers. Most importantly, be true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who share your interests and principles.
### Addressing Academic Obstacles
Adapting to the academic expectations of university was another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university coursework was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s common to feel overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving classmates.
What aided me in facing these issues was the realization that I wasn’t alone. Everyone else was navigating similar uncertainties, and if I struggled with a concept, chances were that others did too. The major takeaway here? Don’t shy away from seeking help. Whether from peers or teaching staff, reaching out can significantly improve your experience.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of support, the Materials department at Imperial is remarkable. The lecturers and support staff genuinely care about student success and are very understanding of the hurdles we face. They keep open lines of communication all year, ensuring that students feel acknowledged and supported.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had utilized it sooner. Volunteering as a year well-being representative was one of the proactive steps I took early, and it turned out to be an excellent decision. It enabled me to cultivate connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal exchanges, becoming acquainted with the staff is one of the best things you can do for yourself.
The key point here? Make the most of the support systems at your disposal. There’s no such thing as excessive help, and the resources are provided for a reason—take advantage of them!
### Insights Gained
Looking back on this year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxieties I held—both before starting university and during the year—were unfounded. With the abundance of support from both staff and fellow students, I’ve learned that I’m never truly on my own.
This year has also enlightened me on balancing the pressures from exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and fun. University is a period of growth, and while challenges are unavoidable, they also present opportunities for learning and flourishing.
As I progress forward, I am thankful for the experiences and insights that have shaped me throughout my first year. To anyone about to embark on their own university path: embrace the nervousness, take those chances, and trust that you’ll find your way.
