**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unfamiliar felt intimidating. Reflecting on the year now, I recognize an academic period full of personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable experiences. But what insights did this year provide, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming connections. For numerous incoming students, this is a significant worry about commencing university, and I was no different. On my initial day in student housing, just prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too nervous to venture out and meet others.

Now, looking back, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family. It all commenced with small efforts—striking up conversations with individuals who were as anxious as I was.

What have I learned? Taking a courageous step at the beginning of the year is invariably beneficial. If you’re not prepared or at ease at once, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaking activities and chances to engage with others. Most crucially, I discovered that authenticity is essential. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re certain to connect with people who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the course load and the heightened complexity of the subjects. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more formidable. It’s easy to become inundated or doubt your capabilities when observing others studying and appearing to thrive.

What assisted me during this period was the acknowledgment that everyone is facing similar difficulties. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The best piece of advice I can offer is to seek assistance. This may be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year—whether that means reaching out to fellow students or asking for help from faculty.

### Encouragement from the Materials Department
On the subject of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. They truly care about students’ success and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained transparent communication with us and demonstrated compassion toward our challenges.

I didn’t take full advantage of the supportive resources available until the end of the year, but I wish I had engaged with them earlier. At the start of the year, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway here is to make use of the support systems available—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
In summary, this year has enlightened me to the fact that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during university—was frequently misplaced. With the extensive support resources offered by faculty and fellow students, I learned that I was never genuinely alone. I also came to understand how to manage exam stress and deadlines alongside moments of enjoyment and relaxation.

Upon reflection, I can see how much I’ve developed, and I eagerly anticipate what the next stage of my university experience will bring.
