**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and doubt regarding the path ahead. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and quiet, jumping into the vastness of university life felt intimidating. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and memorable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely that you’re facing similar concerns. On my very first day in student housing, just days before the semester commenced, I spent an entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. My classmates have evolved into a second family, and it merely required a few moments of bravery to strike up casual conversations with fellow newcomers who were just as nervous as I was.
So, what has this taught me? Taking an early leap of faith is always advantageous. Even if you’re apprehensive or uneasy initially, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Above all, be authentic. Given the diverse community at Imperial, you’ll undoubtedly find those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic expectations of university was another notable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university coursework was evident, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving peers.
What assisted me the most was recognizing that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re grappling with understanding a concept, the likelihood is that others are too. The secret is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. Developing the ability to ask for help is arguably the most invaluable skill you can acquire in your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely wish to see students thrive and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and were always ready to listen to our concerns.
I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support available until the end of the year, and looking back, I wish I had engaged sooner. Early in the year, I took a chance by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which proved incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to connect with the staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My primary lesson? Utilize the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
This year has demonstrated to me that the anxiety I felt prior to and during university was mostly unwarranted. With the extensive support offered by both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to juggle the stress from exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and satisfaction.
Looking back, I recognize how much I’ve grown since that apprehensive first day. University has been a transformative journey, and I am eager to discover what lies ahead.
