**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to embark on my freshman year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unfamiliar felt intimidating. Looking back now, I recognize a year that was full of obstacles but also rich in personal development, education, and lots of enjoyment. So, what lessons did this year impart, and what’s my current status?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the beginning of university was forging friendships. If you’re an upcoming student, this could be one of your primary concerns as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, I spent the entire day cooped up in my room, too fearful to step out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had. These bonds have become like a second family to me, both in my discipline and throughout the university.

What did I learn? Taking that vital first step is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others will present themselves. And above all, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another significant challenge was adapting to the academic demands and complexity. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more daunting. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you’re surrounded by high-achieving classmates.

What aided me was the understanding that everyone is in a similar situation. If you’re having difficulty grasping something, others likely are too. The key is to reach out for assistance—whether it’s from your peers or the teaching staff. Learning to seek support is perhaps the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials Science and Engineering department are phenomenal. They genuinely desire student success and are understanding of the challenges we confront. Throughout the year, they kept open channels of communication with us and offered various forms of assistance.

Although I didn’t fully embrace the pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. One of the best choices I made was to become a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to cultivate connections with faculty members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My biggest lesson? Make the most of the support that’s available to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my inaugural year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I experienced—both before starting university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the vast array of support options provided by staff and fellow students, there’s always someone to turn to. I’ve learned that I’m never truly isolated, and I’ve figured out how to balance having fun with managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.

This year has been a path of transformation, and I’m looking forward to what lies ahead as I continue my studies.
