**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I readied myself to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who has always been introverted and quiet, plunging into university life felt like a daunting challenge. Reflecting on the past year, I appreciate how transformative it has been—filled with personal growth, obstacles, and memorable experiences. So, what have I gained from this year, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the thought of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might resonate with you as well. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can affirm that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like family.

What shifted? It began with light conversations. I discovered that everyone else was experiencing the same trepidation as I was. Taking that first step to interact with others made a significant impact. If you’re feeling concerned about this, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. My key takeaway? Be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re bound to find individuals who genuinely connect with you.

### Addressing the Academic Obstacles
Adapting to the rigorous academic demands was another considerable challenge. Transitioning from A-levels to university was tough, and the leap from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities when you observe others studying and assume they have everything resolved.

What aided me was recognizing that I wasn’t isolated in my struggles. If I had trouble understanding a concept, it was likely that others were facing the same difficulty. Seeking help became my essential resource, and it’s the most crucial lesson I learned in my first year. Whether it’s reaching out to classmates or faculty, don’t shy away from asking for assistance—it exists for a reason.

### The Exceptional Support from Materials Faculty
On the topic of support, the staff within the Materials department are remarkable. They sincerely desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they sustained open lines of communication with us, addressing any issues we brought up.

While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Taking the initiative to become a year well-being representative was one of the steps I took at the beginning of the year, and it turned out to be an enriching experience. It allowed me to forge connections with staff that proved invaluable. Engaging with your lecturers and tutors—whether through formal positions or informal conversations—is one of the best actions you can take for yourself. My suggestion? Utilize the resources and support available—you can never have too much help.

### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced—before and during university—was largely unnecessary. With abundant support from faculty and fellow students, I came to realize I was never genuinely alone. I also acquired the skill to balance stress from exams and due dates with moments of enjoyment and fun.

Looking back, I recognize the journey I’ve undertaken since that anxious fresher who hesitated to leave their comfort zone. University has been a path of development, and I am eager to discover what lies ahead.
