**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was about to embark on my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been introverted and reserved, diving into this new experience felt intimidating. In hindsight, I realize that this academic year has been one marked by personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting aspects I encountered was the challenge of making friends. Beginning university can be stressful, and if you’re a potential student reading this, it might be one of your primary concerns. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days ahead of the start of term, I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet anyone.
Now, looking back, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with simple gestures—like engaging in light conversations with others who were experiencing the same feelings.
So, what did I take away from this? I realized that making an effort to connect at the start of the year is always beneficial. If you’re feeling unprepared or uncomfortable immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and events to facilitate connections. Most importantly, I learned that being authentic is the best strategy. With such a varied student body, you are sure to encounter those who share your passions and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major hurdle was adapting to the increased workload and complexity of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university studies was significant, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more demanding. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when you observe others studying and succeeding.
What assisted me during these periods of uncertainty was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find something challenging, odds are others are too. The essential lesson is to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial skill to cultivate during your first year—don’t hesitate to reach out to classmates or faculty for support.
### Encouragement from Staff and Support Services
On the topic of faculty, one of the standout aspects of my first year has been the remarkable support from the Materials department. The staff truly care about student success and understand the challenges we endure. They foster open communication with students throughout the year, addressing issues and offering advice.
While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Initially, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, which allowed me to form closer connections with staff members. Building rapport with faculty is incredibly valuable, and there are ample opportunities to do so. My most important lesson? Utilize the resources and assistance available—you can never have too much support!
### Key Takeaways
In reflecting on this past year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I felt before and during my time at university was largely unwarranted. There is a wealth of support accessible, from both staff and fellow students, to help you navigate difficulties. I’ve learned that I’m never truly isolated, and I’ve discovered how to manage the stress from exams and deadlines while savoring moments of happiness and fun.
This year has been a life-changing journey, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead as I progress in Materials Science and Engineering.
