Stepping into London for the first time was an awe-inspiring experience. The city felt immense, noisy, and full of life. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to start. If this is your upcoming journey, there’s no need to fret. Here’s how to set your new London life in motion before your time at Imperial commences, ensuring you relish the city.
No matter if you arrive weeks ahead or right before the semester kicks off, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.
First things first: secure a place to stay
Prevent costly hotel expenses by organizing your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone has that privilege, as the top options fill up rapidly. Seek a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning lectures.
Life admin: addressing the necessary basics
Once you’re in London, take care of these essentials without delay:
- Money transfers – as an international student, discover a trustworthy, budget-friendly method to transfer funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide superior exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – having data is vital for navigating a new city. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after your arrival.
- Bank account – while some banks ask for a UK address, digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodate students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job earnings.
- Student ID card – important for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Be sure to pick it up as soon as you can.
Your initial week at Imperial is critical
The week you start at Imperial holds significant importance. It’s the time for meeting flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you’re on the shy side, challenge yourself to join in. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and at society stalls. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.
Getting around London: smart travel choices
During my first week, I was perplexed by the Tube and buses, leading me to trek nine kilometers across London. It was a memorable but hectic adventure. Obtain your Student Oyster card and request the 18+ discount to travel economically. Walking is still an excellent way to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify your comfort zones
London can initially feel emotionally taxing. Having a comfort zone helps—mine is a nearby park where I unwind daily. The O2, just a short 10-minute distance, is another locale where I relax weekly with a film. Discover personal sanctuaries, like a café or bookstore, to recharge and rejuvenate.
And remember to explore!
Acquaint yourself with the surroundings near your campus and residence. Identify the closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries. Tour famous sites, visit free museums, and enjoy a ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will emerge from moments spent wandering a bit off the beaten path!
Last reminders before you jump into Imperial student life
- Bring a reusable bag – stores frequently charge for single-use ones.
- Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t effective against windy rain.
- Participate in unconventional events – they yield the most intriguing stories.
- Don’t panic if you feel lost – it’s a common experience at the start.
You don’t need to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I found myself. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
