Stepping into London for the first time was a lot to take in. The city appeared vast, bustling, and dynamic. Armed with merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to London prior to your time at Imperial, so you can savor the experience of being a newcomer in this vibrant city.

Whether you arrive weeks ahead or just as the semester kicks off, here’s the counsel I wish I had received upon my arrival.

First things foremost: secure your accommodation

Steer clear of hotel costs by organizing your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the best options vanish quickly. Strive to find accommodation close to your campus or near a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early classes.

Essential tasks: handling your vital necessities

Upon reaching London, there are several essentials to take care of:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – make sure you have data for navigation by obtaining a UK SIM card without delay.
  • Setting up a bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and student-friendly, vital for everyday transactions and payments from part-time positions.
  • Student ID card – this is essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and benefiting from student discounts. Collect it at the earliest opportunity.

Your inaugural week at Imperial is crucial

Your initial week at Imperial is significant for your student journey. It’s the moment to connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and engage in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re somewhat reserved, attempt to get involved. I did, and I encountered some of my closest companions during campus tours and society stalls. Your first week plays a key role in shaping your university experience.

Navigating London: travel wisely

<pDuring my first week, I struggled with the Tube and buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable yet chaotic experience. Avoid making my mistake. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for economical Tube and bus fares.

Walking remains a splendid way to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Establish your comfort zones

London can be emotionally intense, especially at first. Identifying a comfort zone helps – for me, it’s the park near my home. I go there daily to unwind. My second favorite spot is the O2, just a short 10-minute journey away, where I indulge in a movie weekly.

Find your own comfort zones, whether it’s a café, a bookstore, or a riverside bench. These places can be more beneficial than you might realize.

And don’t overlook the importance of exploration!

Familiarize yourself with your frequently visited places around campus and your residence. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee haunts.

Check out iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and ride a red double-decker bus for the views. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from moments when you’ve gotten a bit lost.

Final pointers before you immerse yourself in Imperial student life

  • Carry a reusable bag – stores frequently charge for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are not very effective against the wind.
  • Attend unique events – they lead to wonderful stories.
  • It’s normal to feel disoriented – don’t worry if you find yourself in that state at first.

You don’t have to have everything sorted out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London narrative one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
