Stepping into London at first seemed daunting due to its size and rapid pace. With nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about how to start. If this resonates with you, don’t fret. Here’s a guide to help you acclimate to life in London before your time at Imperial begins, ensuring you make the most of your new city experience.
Whether you’re arriving early or just before the term starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.
First things first: secure accommodation
Prevent high hotel expenses by finding a place to stay ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone has the same fortune, as the top choices disappear quickly. Aim for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize commute times.
Life admin: managing the vital basics
As soon as you arrive in London, tackle these necessities without delay:
– Money transfers: As an international student, identify a dependable and economical method for transferring funds. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.
– UK SIM card: Obtain one promptly to avoid navigating a new city without data.
– Bank account: While some banks need a UK address, digital banks like Monzo or Starling are swift and student-friendly. Establish an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.
– Student ID card: This is crucial for gaining entry to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Collect it at the earliest opportunity.
The first week at Imperial is vital
Your introductory week at Imperial is essential. It’s the time to connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and register for activities that pique your interest.
Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to engage. I did, and I formed close friendships during campus tours and society booths. Your initial week will set the stage for your entire university experience.
Navigating London: travel wisely
During my inaugural week, I ended up walking nine kilometers across London due to confusion with the Tube and buses. It was memorable yet chaotic. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced travel costs.
Walking remains the best method to experience the city and its culture. London is filled with hidden treasures you’ll uncover through exploration.
Locate your comfort zones
London can be emotionally intense, particularly at first. A comforting spot is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I go to find my balance. My second favorite is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I relax with a movie weekly.
Discover your own places, such as a cozy cafe, a bookstore, or a riverside bench, where you can unwind and recharge.
And don’t miss out on exploration!
Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Discover your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee locations.
Visit iconic landmarks, check out free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus for a view. Some of your best memories may come from moments of getting a bit lost!
Final hints before you immerse yourself in Imperial student life
– Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use bags.
– Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas aren’t effective in windy conditions.
– Embrace unusual events; they can lead to great anecdotes.
– Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s a common feeling at first.
You don’t need to have everything figured out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood when I started at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
