Arriving in London for the first time was a daunting experience. The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt lost on how to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to your new life in London before commencing at Imperial, allowing you to relish the thrill of being a newcomer in the city.
Whether you arrive days in advance or right before term kicks off, here’s the guidance I wish had been shared with me upon my arrival.
Prioritize: securing housing
Steer clear of hotel costs by finding accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone enjoys that fortune, as the finest options get snatched up quickly. Aim for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy journeys to early lectures.
Administrative tasks: organizing the essentials
Once you’re in London, tend to these necessities without delay:
- Money exchanges – as an international student, discover a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut can help you avoid unfavorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – obtain one swiftly to ensure you have data for navigation, which is vital in an unfamiliar area or country.
- Bank account – several banks require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and friendly to students. Establish an account for daily use and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – this provides access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it as soon as feasible.
Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital
Your initial week at Imperial is essential for your academic journey. It’s the time when you’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Take part in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and engage in activities that captivate your interest.
Even if you are reserved, make an effort to join in. I did, and I formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society booths. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.
Getting around London: travel wisely
During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London to explore. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Avoid my error by acquiring your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for lower Tube and bus fares.
Walking remains a fantastic way to experience the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify your comfort zones
London can be emotionally intense, especially at first. Having a comfort zone is beneficial – mine is a local park where I go to unwind daily. My second favorite spot is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I watch films weekly to relax.
Discover your own comfort zones, whether a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to rejuvenate and reset.
And remember to explore!
Familiarize yourself with frequently visited areas near campus and your residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred eating or coffee spots.
Visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus for spectacular views. Some of your most cherished memories will result from getting a bit lost!
Last-minute tips before you immerse yourself in Imperial student life
- Grab a reusable bag – shops frequently charge for single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas may not cut it in gusty weather.
- Attend unique events – they lead to memorable stories.
- Don’t panic if you feel disoriented – it’s entirely normal in the beginning.
You don’t need to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I embarked on my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London story one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
