Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling. With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to go through this, there’s no need to stress. Here’s a few tips to assist you in settling into London before beginning your journey at Imperial, so you can relish your new urban life.
No matter if you arrive weeks in advance or just as the term kicks off, here’s what I wish I had been aware of upon my arrival.
Secure Accommodation
Steer clear of pricey hotel accommodations by setting up your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The prime locations get booked up swiftly, so try to find somewhere close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to sidestep lengthy commutes to your morning lectures.
Important Arrangements to Handle
After settling in London, take care of these important tasks swiftly:
- Money transfers – as an overseas student, seek a reliable and cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – obtain one without delay to ensure you have data for navigation in a new city.
- Bank account – some traditional banks may require a UK address, but digital options such as Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Set up an account for everyday transactions and income from part-time jobs.
- Student ID card – crucial for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.
Your First Week at Imperial Matters
Your initial week at Imperial is significant. It’s the time when you’ll meet your flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage with Welcome Week to delve into over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and get involved in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you are reserved, challenge yourself to take part. I did, and I formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society activities. The first week shapes your university experience.
Getting Around London: Smart Travel
Throughout my first week, I walked nine kilometers across London, grappling with the Tube and bus system. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel economically on the Tube and buses.
Walking remains an excellent way to experience the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
Initially, London can feel emotionally intense. Having a haven is helpful. For me, it’s the park near my residence where I go each day to decompress. My second go-to is the adjacent O2, where I enjoy movies weekly to unwind.
Discover your own comfort zones, be it a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, where you can relax and rejuvenate.
Get Out and Explore!
Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll visit frequently around campus and your home. Identify the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your favorite eateries or coffee shops.
Explore iconic landmarks, check out free museums, ride a double-decker bus, and meander without a set plan. Some of your most memorable moments will emerge from being a bit lost!
Final Advice Before Starting at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag – shops charge for single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can be ineffective in breezy conditions.
- Participate in unique events – they often lead to great stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling at first.
You don’t have to have everything figured out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
