Arriving in London was quite a lot to take in; the city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. With nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, there’s no need for concern. Here’s my guidance to assist you in acclimatizing to London before commencing your journey at Imperial, enabling you to make the most of your new urban life.

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the semester begins, here’s the counsel I wish I had been given.

Secure Accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotel stays by finding accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone enjoys that fortune. Look for a location close to the campus or on a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy travel times for early classes.

Key Life Administration

Take care of these essentials soon after your arrival in London:

  • Money Transfers: As an international student, seek out a trustworthy and economical way to transfer funds from your home country. Services such as Wise or Revolut provide more favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM Card: Obtain one promptly to ensure you have internet access for navigating a new city.
  • Bank Account: While some banks necessitate a UK address, online banks like Monzo or Starling are swift and cater well to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time work payments.
  • Student ID Card: This is essential for accessing buildings on campus, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Get it as soon as you can.

The Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is vital for connecting with flatmates, peers, and future companions. Take part in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you’re feeling shy, try to get involved; I made good friends during campus tours and society stalls. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Navigating London Effectively

At first, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was a notable experience but rather chaotic. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to make traveling more affordable. Walking remains a fantastic way to uncover and enjoy hidden treasures.

Identify Your Favorite Spots

London can feel overwhelming, so it’s important to find a comforting location. I have a local park that I visit daily to unwind. Another favorite is the O2, just a short 10-minute journey away, where I catch movies weekly. Discover your own personal spots, be it a cafe, bookstore, or bench by the river, where you can relax.

Discover the City

Familiarize yourself with the area surrounding your campus and residence. Locate grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to eateries or coffee shops. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a double-decker bus for the views. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from spontaneous exploration.

Final Advice for Starting at Imperial

  • Carry a reusable bag to evade fees associated with single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas can be ineffective in windy weather.
  • Participate in unusual events for unique experiences.
  • Don’t be alarmed if you feel disoriented; it’s perfectly normal at the beginning.

You don’t need to have everything sorted from the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I first arrived at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and trip to Tesco at a time.
