Stepping into London for the very first time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared vast, noisy, and energetic. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, don’t fret. Here are some tips to help you acclimate to London before beginning your journey at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new city adventure.

Whether you touch down weeks in advance or right before the term starts, here are insights I wish I had known upon my arrival.

Secure Your Accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotel accommodations by arranging your living situation ahead of time. I had some luck, but not everyone does, as the prime locations are snatched up quickly. Try to find a place close to your campus or along a convenient Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for your early classes.

Fundamental Life Administration

When you arrive, focus on these essential tasks:

  • Money transfers – as an overseas student, seek an economical method to receive funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide excellent exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – navigating a new city is challenging without data. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan as soon as possible.
  • Opening a bank account – some banks stipulate a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are prompt and cater well to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and earnings from part-time jobs.
  • Student ID card – this is vital for accessing campus structures, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it at the earliest opportunity.

The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial

Your initial week at Imperial is pivotal for your student experience. It’s the time you’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and possible friends. Engage with Welcome Week to delve into over 350 student-led clubs and societies and sign up for the ones that appeal to you.

Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during campus tours and society activities. Your first week lays the groundwork for your university experience.

Smart Travel in London

During my first week, I had little knowledge of the Tube or buses and found myself walking nine kilometers across London. While it was a memorable experience, it isn’t the best choice. Purchase your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel economically on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains an excellent way to immerse yourself in the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Discover Your Comfort Zones

London can be quite overwhelming, especially in the beginning. Having a favorite spot can be soothing – mine is a nearby park that I visit every day to unwind. Another favorite is the O2, merely 10 minutes away, where I enjoy movies weekly to relax.

Identify your own spaces, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or a riverside seat, to help you refresh and rejuvenate.

Explore Your City

Get to know the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Find the nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and your preferred eateries or coffee shops.

Check out iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and ride on a red double-decker bus to take in the sights. Some of your most cherished memories will emerge from moments of wandering!

Last-Minute Tips Before Starting at Imperial

  • Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can be ineffective in blustery conditions.
  • Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s perfectly normal at first.

You don’t need to have everything sorted out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already doing better than I was when I began my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus journey and Tesco visit at a time.
