Stepping foot in London for the first time was an extraordinary experience. The city appeared enormous, noisy, and bustling. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to begin a similar adventure, don’t fret. Here are some tips to assist you in adapting to your new life in London prior to commencing at Imperial, enabling you to truly relish the excitement of being in a new city.
Whether you arrive a few weeks ahead or just right before the term commences, here’s the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.
First things first: secure housing
Arrange your accommodation early to prevent pricey hotel bills. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the finest options get snapped up quickly. Strive to locate a residence near your campus or close to a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes to early lectures.
Life admin: addressing the essential tasks
Upon reaching London, there are several essentials to tackle promptly:
- Handling money transfers – as an international student, you’ll need a dependable and budget-friendly method to transfer funds from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut can help you bypass unfavorable exchange rates.
- Acquiring a UK SIM card – having data is vital for navigating in a new location or country. Get a UK SIM card and data plan as soon as you arrive.
- Establishing a bank account – while some banks require a UK address, digital banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and accommodating for students. Set up a bank account swiftly for everyday transactions and to receive payments for any part-time work.
- Obtaining your student ID card – this card provides access to campus buildings, library privileges, and student discounts at various locations. Acquire it as early as possible.
Your first week at Imperial is key
Your inaugural week at Imperial is significant for your student experience. It’s when you connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies, and enroll in activities that catch your interest.
Even if you feel bashful, make an effort to get involved. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week will set the tone for your university life.
Getting around London: travel wisely
During my first week, I didn’t grasp how to navigate the Tube or buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was hectic yet unforgettable. Avoid my blunder by obtaining your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for reduced Tube and bus fares.
Regardless, walking is still a fantastic way to discover the city and unearth hidden treasures.
Identify your comfort zones
London can be emotionally intense, particularly at the beginning. Having a comfort zone is beneficial – mine is a park close to my home, where I go daily to unwind. Another favorite spot is the O2, just a 10-minute walk away, where I catch films weekly to relax.
Find your own comfort zones, whether it’s a café, bookshop, or a riverside bench. These places can offer essential reprieve and rejuvenation.
And remember to explore!
Get acquainted with your new surroundings, including local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and your preferred spots for meals or coffee.
Visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, and enjoy the sights from a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from spontaneous escapades.
Final recommendations before diving into Imperial student life
- Carry a reusable bag – single-use bags typically come with a fee.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas tend to be ineffective in windy environments.
- Embrace unfamiliar events – they frequently lead to fantastic stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a usual feeling at first.
You don’t need to have everything sorted from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I joined Imperial. So take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
