Strive to locate a residence near your campus or at least close to a reliable Tube line, as lengthy commutes for early classes can be grueling.

- Money transfers – As an international student, seek out a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer money from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut provide superior exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – Without mobile data, getting directions becomes nearly impossible, which is less than ideal in a new setting. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after you arrive.
- Bank account creation – Some banks will ask for a UK address, yet digital banks such as Monzo or Starling facilitate quick and student-friendly account setups. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – This is vital for gaining access to campus premises, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to obtain your student ID card swiftly.
Significance of the Initial Week at Imperial
The first week at Imperial is vital for crafting your student experience. It’s the time when you will meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-led clubs and societies and enroll in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you tend to be shy, challenge yourself to take part. I did, and I forged some of my closest friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society booths. Your initial week establishes the groundwork for your university journey.
Intelligent Travel in London
During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic but unforgettable. Don’t replicate my error. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel on the Tube and buses at a lower cost.
Nevertheless, walking remains the finest way to immerse yourself in the city and its ambiance. You’ll uncover hidden treasures by exploring on foot.
Discover Your Comfort Zones
London can be emotionally taxing, especially at first. Having a comforting spot can be beneficial – mine is the park close to my home, where I go daily to unwind. My second favorite is the O2, just a 10-minute stroll away, where I relax with a movie each week.
Identify your own places, like a café, a bookstore, or a riverside bench, where you can de-stress and reset. It’s more beneficial than you might anticipate.
Discover the City!
Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequent around campus and home. Pinpoint your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee locations.
Visit iconic landmarks, check out free museums, experience the views on a red double-decker bus, and roam without a specific plan. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from those moments of getting a bit lost!

- Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t effective against rain driven by the wind.
