**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was preparing to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, venturing into the unknown was outside my comfort zone. Now, as I reflect on a year filled with growth, obstacles, and enjoyable experiences, I cannot help but consider the lessons I’ve gleaned and the progress I’ve made.
### Confronting the First Challenge: Making Connections
One of the most daunting facets of beginning university was forming friendships. If you are an incoming student reading this, it’s probably something that concerns you as well. On my initial day in student housing, just days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to emerge and introduce myself to others.
Fast forward to today, and I can assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. At Imperial, I have discovered a second family, both within my program and across the institution. It all began with small actions—engaging in casual conversations with individuals who were equally new and apprehensive as I was.
What has this taught me? Taking that first step at the year’s beginning is vital. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, I learned to be authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you are sure to find people who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands and complexities was another considerable challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and doubt your skills when observing others studying and apparently thriving.
What assisted me through this period was recognizing that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you find something difficult, it is likely that others are too. The essential action is to seek help—whether from your classmates or the faculty. This may be the most crucial ability to cultivate in your first year.
### Support from the Materials Department
On the topic of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and support personnel are genuinely invested in student success and show empathy towards the challenges we encounter. They keep channels of communication open with students throughout the academic year, addressing our worries and providing support.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support services until the year’s end, I wish I had done so earlier. One of the best choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This role helped me establish connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. Whether through official positions or casual encounters, building relationships with the staff is one of the most beneficial actions you can take. My biggest takeaway? Utilize the support that is accessible to you—there’s no such thing as too much help!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I have learned that the apprehension I experienced before and during the beginning of university was frequently unwarranted. With the abundance of support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve discovered how to handle stressors like exams and deadlines while still embracing moments of joy and fun, and I’ve evolved in ways I never anticipated.
To anyone about to embark on their university adventure: welcome the challenges, take those courageous leaps, and remember that assistance is always close at hand.
