**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was poised to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been somewhat introverted, venturing into the unfamiliar was a rather intimidating undertaking. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyable moments, I can truly value the extent of my learning and my progress.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges of beginning university was the task of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a significant concern for you as well. On my first day at student housing, just days before classes started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known.
The pivotal moment arrived when I chose to encourage myself to engage in light conversation with those who, like me, were navigating this new setting. Gradually, these exchanges grew into friendships, and I now regard my friends here as a second family. What lesson did I draw from this? Taking that courageous first step at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re feeling hesitant, don’t fret—there are abundant icebreaker activities and chances to bond with others. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re bound to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Addressing Academic Obstacles
Another major challenge I encountered was adapting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was a stark transition, and the jump from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become daunted or doubt your capabilities when observing others who appear to have a firm grasp on their studies.
What assisted me during these bouts of self-doubt was the acknowledgment that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re finding something tricky to grasp, odds are that others are facing the same challenges. The essential approach is to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. This is perhaps the most crucial insight I gained during my first year: never hesitate to seek help.
### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the faculty within the Materials department have been remarkable. They sincerely desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our issues and offering direction.
I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support offered until near the end of the year, and I wish I had engaged with it earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took an initiative by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be priceless. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway here? Utilize the resources and support networks available to you—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that a lot of the apprehension I felt prior to embarking on university was misplaced. With the extensive array of support options provided by both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me the art of juggling the demands of exams and deadlines while also enjoying life, and it has highlighted the importance of stepping beyond my comfort zone.
To anyone gearing up for university: welcome the challenges, take the plunge, and remember that support is always close at hand.
