**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty as I prepared to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping boldly into university life felt overwhelming. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyable experiences, I can appreciate how much I’ve absorbed and how far I’ve advanced.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered was forging new friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you may relate to my feelings. On my first day in university housing, I spent hours confined to my room, too anxious to venture out and make introductions. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve found some of the greatest friendships of my life—friends who resemble a second family here at Imperial.
So, what contributed to my progress? I discovered that taking a courageous step at the beginning of the year is essential. Even if you’re not fully prepared straight away, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker activities and opportunities to connect with others await you. Most importantly, remain authentic. With such a diverse group of people at university, you are likely to discover those who share your passions and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Obstacles
Another significant challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first term to the second proved even more difficult. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others study and wondering if you measure up.
What helped me navigate those times was the acknowledgment that everyone else is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s probable that others are too. The essential takeaway is to ask for assistance—be it from classmates or teaching staff. This is possibly the most crucial lesson I learned throughout my first year: don’t shy away from seeking help.
### Helpful Staff and Student Support
Speaking of assistance, the staff within the Materials department are remarkable. They sincerely want students to thrive and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us and were always available to address our worries.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I’d initiated this sooner. Taking on the position of a year well-being representative was one of my early leaps, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. It enabled me to foster relationships with staff members, which became invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and I strongly encourage you to seize these opportunities. The assistance they provide is there for a purpose—make use of it!
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that much of the trepidation I felt before and during university was often unfounded. With a range of support structures available, from faculty to fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to manage the stress from exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and fun, and I’ve gained more confidence in myself during this process.
For anyone preparing to start their own university adventure, recognize that feeling anxious is completely normal. But also realize that you are entering a space filled with chances for growth, support, and connection. Take that bold step—you won’t regret it.
