Stepping into London for the very first time was quite an experience. The city felt vast, noisy, and bustling with energy. Armed with merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself at a loss about where to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, don’t fret. Here’s my guidance to assist you in acclimating to London prior to commencing at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new urban life.
Whether you arrive weeks ahead of time or just before the term begins, here’s the advice I wish someone had shared with me.
Locate accommodation
Secure your lodging in advance to sidestep costly hotel fees. I was lucky, but not all are, as the prime choices disappear quickly. Target a place close to your campus or an efficient Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early classes.
Important administrative tasks to tackle
Once you’re in London, take care of these important tasks:
- Money transfers – if you’re an international student, identify a dependable and cost-effective method to send money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- Get a UK SIM card – acquire one promptly to ensure access to data for navigation in unfamiliar areas.
- Open a bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are swift and accommodating for students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
- Obtain your student ID card – crucial for accessing campus, using the library, and obtaining student discounts. Retrieve it as soon as you can.
Your first week at Imperial is vital
The first week is essential for shaping your student experience. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to engage. I forged lasting friendships during campus tours and society events. This week lays the foundation for your university experience.
Smart travel in London
At first, I struggled to navigate the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers through London. It was unforgettable yet hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for cost-effective travel. Walking remains an excellent way to explore and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify your favorite spots
London can feel emotionally intense. Seek out a comforting spot, whether it’s a park, a café, or a bookstore, to unwind and recharge. My favorites include a nearby park and the O2 for watching movies. These locations provide solace within the bustling city.
Discover the city
Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and home. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred dining spots. Visit iconic landmarks, free museums, and ride a red double-decker bus for a scenic experience. Some of your finest memories will be made while exploring and getting slightly lost.
Final thoughts for your start at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas are not reliable in windy conditions.
- Participate in unique events to create memorable stories.
- Don’t panic if you feel disoriented; it’s a common sensation at first.
You don’t need to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
